Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, said that most Indonesian nationals imprisoned abroad are detained in Malaysia and Saudi Arabia.

"These two countries hold the largest number of Indonesian inmates," he said on Thursday (28/11/2024).

Minister Yusril acknowledged that his office has yet to compile detailed data on Indonesian prisoners overseas.

"While we have accurate records of foreign inmates in Indonesia, including their sentences, we still need to collect comprehensive data on Indonesians imprisoned abroad," he added, as reported by antaranews.com.

The minister noted that the ministry plans to use ongoing discussions about prisoner transfer agreements with nations such as the Philippines, Australia, and France to gather more information on Indonesian nationals detained in those countries.

He said that not all Indonesians abroad with legal issues are inmates.

"There are those listed as fugitives (DPO), but these are distinct from convicted prisoners," Minister Yusril explained.

Responsibility for fugitives lies with law enforcement, while inmates fall under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Corrections and Immigration.
