Inp.polri.go.id - Bukittinggi. The Agam Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) announced on Wednesday (24/1/2024) that the emergency alert status of Mount Marapi has been extended for one month, from 25 January to 25 February 2024
The decision was made after a meeting attended by by representatives of the district administration, local police and military offices, BPBD and the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Centre (PVMBG), antaranews.com reported.
"Mount Marapi's emergency alert status was first declared on 10 January and ended on 24 January 2024," said BPBD Agam office acting head Bambang Warsito.
He explained that the extension of the emergency alert status was triggered by the volcano's ongoing eruption.
Mount Marapi is classified as one of the most active volcanoes on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. This active volcano in West Sumatra first erupted at 2.54 pmon 3 December 2023. It has claimed 23 hikers.
