Inp.polri.go.id - Lumajang. Mount Semeru erupted at 4.19 pm local time on Thursday (15/4/2024) with the eruption lasting 153 seconds. The volcanic ash column reached about 500 meters above the peak.

According to Mukdas Sofian, the on-duty officer at the Semeru Volcano Observation Post, the ash cloud appeared white to gray and drifted north. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 mm.

Since the beginning of 2024, Mount Semeru has erupted 937 times as of Thursday. Recent seismic activity included 107 eruption tremors, among other quake types, according to antaranews.com.

Mount Semeru remains on Level II or "Waspada" status.

The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) advised against activities in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan and within a 500-meter radius from riverbanks. It also urged local residents to avoid areas within three kilometers of the crater to stay safe from potential rock falls and hot clouds.
