Inp.polri.go.id - Situbondo. The motorized wooden boat KLM Lorena Sari sank between Madura and Situbondo on Sunday afternoon (December 8, 2024), leaving one dead, one missing, and 49 survivors.

"The survivors were rescued by the MV Berlian Selatan, which was passing through the area, and evacuation is currently underway at Jangkar Ferry Port," said Jefri, the Commander of the Search and Rescue (SAR) from the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) in Jember that oversees Situbondo.

The boat departed from Sapudi Island, Sumenep regency, Madura, heading to Kalbut Port, Situbondo. The incident occurred around 1.30 pm. local time, just hours into the journey. Preliminary reports suggest the boat may have suffered a hull breach, causing it to sink.

Rescue efforts continued late into the evening, with ambulances arriving at Jangkar Port to transport survivors.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident.
