Inp.polri.go.id - Batam.  The Barelang Sub-regoinal Police in Batam facilitated a peaceful commemoration of the first anniversary of the Rempang tragedy on Saturday (7/9/2024), where local residents gathered on Barelang Bridge 4.

Around 25 police officers and military personnel helped manage the protest, which included flower-scattering and a prayer ceremony, starting at 3.30 pm, according to antaranews.com.

The event, marking one year since the clash between residents and security forces over the Rempang Eco City project, saw participants peacefully protesting the planned relocation of the community. Police directed traffic, blocking one lane for the protest while allowing the other lane to stay open.

“We ensured the event ran smoothly by providing security and controlling traffic,” said Galang Police Office Chief First Inspector Alex Yasral, adding that the demonstration was peaceful.

Miswadi, representing the local community, reaffirmed their rejection of the National Strategic Project (PSN).

“This tragedy left deep scars on the Malay people of Rempang. We will continue to resist relocation,” he said.

After the protest, participants moved to Semulang Hulu for further activities, including prayers, a candlelight vigil, and a community gathering.
