Inp.polri.go.id - Lewoleba. The Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Agency (PVMBG) of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources cautioned residents and tourists against venturing near Mount Ile Lewotolok's peak in Lembata, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), as the mountain had been classified at level III, indicating an Alert status.

Head of the Mount Ile Lewotolok Observation Post, Jeffry Pugel in Lewoleba, the capital of Lembata regency, advised local residents on  Friday (26/4/2024) to avoid the area within a two-kilometer radius from the center of activity and the southeastern sector three kilometers from the center.

This advisory came after reports of foreign tourists attempting to climb the mountain on Thursday, as reported by antaranews.com.

The Observation Post’s guidance stemmed from a thorough evaluation of volcanic activity. It also provided daily updates on the mountain's status and installed safety warning signs in high-risk areas.

Jeffry stressed the importance of cooperation from all parties, including village administrations and the public.

Mount Ile Lewotolok, the sole volcano in NTT at level III, continued to show heightened eruption activity and smoke emissions, along with a notable increase in earthquakes, according to the evaluation conducted from 16-22 April 2024.
