Inp.polri.go.id - Batam. The Riau Islands Regional Police (Kepri) uncovered 30 cases of criminal acts of human trafficking (TPPO) with up to 50 suspects. From this case, as many as 129 victims were saved. These cases were revealed from June 5 to July 20, 2023. Head of the Public Relations Department of the Riau Islands Regional Police, Police Senior Superintendent Zahwani Pandra Arsyad said, in the July period, the Riau Islands Regional Police succeeded in uncovering 30 cases of TPPO with details, Sub-Regional Barelang City Police 18 cases, Riau Islands Regional Police 9 cases, Sub-Regional Tanjung Pinang City Police 1 case, Sub-Regional Bintan Police 1 case, and Sub-Regional Karimun Police 1 case. "The modus operandi of the suspects is that they target people from the middle to lower economic class by tempting salaries and a decent life out there," said Police Senior Superintendent Pandra, Saturday (22/7/23). Then the suspects gave the victim a job that was not proper and did not match what they had previously promised. So that the suspects can be charged with Law Number 21 of 2007 concerning the Eradication of the Crime of Human Trafficking and Law Number 18 of 2017 concerning the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers. "The success of the Riau Islands Regional Police in uncovering cases of criminal acts of human trafficking is proof of the seriousness of the police in terms of eradicating and preventing cases of criminal acts of human trafficking," he said. Police Senior Superintendent Pandra said that this disclosure could not be separated from the cooperation and coordination with the Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection Agency (BP2MI), the International Relations Division of the Indonesian National Police (INP), and other relevant agencies in carrying out prevention, handling, and legal action. The Riau Islands Regional Police will continue to provide socialization and education to Indonesian people who wish to work abroad to use procedural channels. Because, by using procedural channels, our citizens will get comprehensive protection. "I appeal to the public to ensure that labor service providers are registered and have official permits, don't be easily lured in with large salaries," he said. (ndt/dd/um)
