Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported that 5,464 people have been evacuated due to increased volcanic activity at Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Flores Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).
Abdul Muhari, the Head of the BNPB's Center for Disaster Data, Information, and Communication, said that the evacuees include 2,659 males and 2,805 females. The breakdown of the data included 575 elderly individuals, 312 children, 118 nursing mothers, 76 toddlers, 23 pregnant women, and 12 individuals with disabilities. The largest number of evacuees, he added, comes from Wulanggitang Sub-district, totaling 3,609 people, followed by evacuees from Titehena Sub-district, reaching 1,698 people, antaranews.com reported. The local administration has declared a 14-day emergency status for the natural disaster due to the eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki from 1 to 14 January 2024. Through this status declaration, Abdul said, the local administration can use resources for emergency response, particularly in addressing the needs of evacuees. On 9 January 2024, at 11 pm, the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) changed the volcanic activity status from Level III or Alert to Level IV or Warning. PVMBG recommended that the community refrain from activities within a four-kilometer radius from the volcano's summit and a five-kilometer sector northwest to north. BNPB has provided emergency support in the form of ready-to-use funds and food and non-food items. In addition, BNPB sent a team today to assist the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) in emergency response, including information management. (mg/inp/pr/nm)
