Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has estimated that over 3,000 residents in West Halmahera, North Maluku, may need evacuation due to Mount Ibu's ongoing eruption.

Abdul Muhari, the Head of BNPB's Disaster Data and Communication Center, explained on Thursday (16/1/2025) that the estimate was based on the emergency response during a similar eruption in May 2024.

Residents from villages in North Ibu Subdistrict, such as Sangaji Nyeku and Tokuoku, are within the affected radius and part of the evacuation plan, according to antaranews.com.

“Field coordination in Halmahera Barat is well-established. Now, it’s about executing the plan,” Muhari said, adding that BNPB is collaborating with local authorities, the Indonesian Military (TNI), the Indonesian National Police (INP), the National Serch and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), and other agencies based on recommendations from the Geological Agency.

The Geological Agency raised Mount Ibu’s alert status to “Awas” (Level IV) on Wednesday after detecting increased volcanic activity from January 1-14, 2025. Eruptions averaged 70 events daily, with ash columns reaching up to 4 kilometers.

Residents are advised to stay at least 5-6 kilometers away from the crater.

The West Halmahera  government has declared a 14-day emergency response, effective Wednesday.
