Eight Volcanoes Erupted 66,197 Times in 2023: Minister Arifin

Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta.  The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Centre (PVMBG) of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources recorded that eight active volcanoes erupted a total of 66,197 times in 2023. The identified volcanoes include Semeru, Marapi, Anak Krakatau, Dempo, Dukono, Ibu, Ili Lewotolok and Lewotobi Laki-laki, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Arifin Tasrif told a press conference on Monday (15/1/2023). Among them, Mount Semeru had the highest eruption frequency with 29,131 eruptions, followed by Mount Ibu with 21,100 eruptions, Mount Ili Lewotolok with 11,500 eruptions, and Mount Dukono with 3,324 eruptions. Other volcanoes on the list include Anak Krakatau with 696 eruptions, Marapi with 436 eruptions, Dempo and Lewotobi Laki-laki with five eruption each, antaranews.com reported. Minister Arifin revealed that the most severe impact of eruptions in 2023 occurred at Mount Marapi in West Sumatra. An eruption on 3 December 2023 affected 75 climbers, resulting in the evacuation of 40 survivors, injuries to 11 and the death of 24 climbers. PVMBG is currently working to optimize and modernize the entire geological disaster management system, including equipment for monitoring volcanic eruptions. "We are also upgrading the skills of personnel and improving coordination with local governments to anticipate and cooperate in the event of urgent action," said Minister Arifin. (mg/inp/pr/nm)
