inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Ministry of Environment (KLH) has asked local governments to immediately improve waste management in their areas, including Final Processing Sites (TPA) that are still conducting open dumping because there is potential for criminal sanctions.
KLH Waste Management Director Novrizal Tahar said that the Environmental Control Agency (BPLH) has supervised 343 TPAs that are indicated to still be conducting open dumping and there is potential for government coercive sanctions against their managers.
This is related to the target of the Minister of Environment (LH) Hanif Faisol Nurofiq that all landfills in Indonesia will no longer carry out open dumping by 2026.
Open dumping landfills themselves have an impact on the environment ranging from leachate pollution to methane gas leaks that can cause fires in landfills.
“So it is hoped that those of you who are being caught in this case to be more aware, because if not, you might get entangled into a more serious law enforcement,” says Tahar on Monday (2/3/2025).
He encouraged regional governments, both legislative and executive, to collaborate in improving waste management in their respective regions.
Waste management efforts, he said, are not only the responsibility of the head of the agency that oversees waste issues in the regional government, but also regional leaders and newly elected legislative members, including regarding the budget which is often an issue in waste management in the region.
