Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Silmy Karim, the Director General of Immigration at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, has emphasized the need for immigration officers to carry firearms due to the significant risks they face in their duties.
The recently approved bill amending Law No. 6 of 2011 on Immigration includes new regulations regarding the use of weapons in immigration enforcement.
“A tragic incident occurred in April 2023, where an immigration officer was fatally stabbed by a foreign detainee linked to terrorism during an escape attempt,” he said in a statement on SUnday (29/9/2024), noting that officers stationed in high-conflict border areas are particularly vulnerable to danger.
Immigration officers often protect against dangerous transnational criminals, making firearms necessary for self-defense and effective suspect detention, Silmy added.
“The threats of violence, terrorism, and unrest highlight the importance of armed protection, which can also deter potential aggressors,” he said.
In 2024, immigration enforcement actions increased by 124% compared to the previous year, with 3,393 actions recorded from January to September. This rise in operational activity raises risks for officers, prompting the government to regulate firearm use through ministerial guidelines after thorough studies and public consultations.
Silmy explained that while regulations are pending, strict criteria and procedures will be established for officers who are authorized to carry firearms.
