Inp.polri.go.id – Bali. Indonesia is committed to implement blue economy in in marine spatial management through their policies.
“For the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries in implementing blue economy, we have five main policies. This policies will also be presented to all Archipelagic and Island States (AIS) Forum member,” says the Minister, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono.
The first of the five main policies is expanding Conservation area, which is important due to its relation with climate change.
“We want to realize this sea conservation could absorb the carbon five times higher than those in land, while also producing oxygen, and then be the natural spawning area for fisheries in the sea,” explain the Minister.
The second the policy is a measurable fishing policy.
“We will also communicate with all AIS Forum members that Indonesia has already implement this policy that fishing has been authorized to be based on quota,” he says.
Trenggono then explains the third policy which is develop sustainable aquaculture, both in coastal fisheries, marine fisheries and inland fisheries.
“This became important and there are five commodities that has to be the top product in next several years, which are shrimp, lobster, crab, tilapia and seaweed," he said.
Fourth policy is supervision of small islands and coasts, which is also important for its relation to climate change.
“The fifth policy has been presented in International forum, including in AIS Forum last year, that efforts have been made to clean up plastic waste in the sea. In our efforts we also involved the participation of fishermen," said Trenggono.
Minister Trenggono says the formation of AIS Forum always refers to the UN convention on the law of the sea, especially regarding good global maritime governance.
