Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The government of Indonesia is set to sue the United Kingdom's Serious Fraud Office (SFO) over a €992 million compensation linked to the 2017 Garuda aircraft bribery case.
Cahyo Rahardian Muzhar, the Director-General of Legal Administration at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, expressed on Tuesday (30/4/2024) his regret over the lack of communication from the UK government regarding the compensation.
The UK had conducted a criminal probe into the Garuda aircraft purchase bribery allegations.
However, the legal process was halted after the UK law allowed termination upon paying a €992 million fine.
While not intervening in UK laws, Cahyo emphasized Indonesia's grievances due to the overpriced aircraft purchase without receiving compensation.
Therefore, Indonesia planned to sue the SFO in UK courts to claim compensation for losses incurred.
Cahyo highlighted the unfairness of the SFO's investigation, which utilized Indonesian information and court rulings without fair compensation.
The Indonesian government has consulted legal experts in the UK and planned to file the lawsuit soon.
Efforts to communicate with the UK government before the COVID-19 pandemic yielded no satisfactory results, prompting Indonesia to consider legal action against the SFO.
Cahyo emphasized the need to evaluate whether the UK considered Indonesia an equal partner in this context.
