Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Indonesia urged the United Kingdom (UK) to leverage its role as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to address the Palestine issue and advocate for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.
Sidharto R. Suryodipuro, the Director General of ASEAN Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized on Friday (26/7/2024) that the actions of permanent UNSC members like the UK are crucial in preventing further deterioration of the humanitarian situation in Palestine due to ongoing Israeli aggression since 7 October 2023.
At a meeting with UK Foreign Minister David Lammy in Vientiane, Laos, he highlighted the UK's significant role in recognizing Palestine as a state and facilitating its membership in the UN, according to antaranews.com..
Director General Sidharto also stressed the importance of the UK’s continued support for the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and other UN bodies working on Palestinian issues.
Indonesia, alongside other countries, has been advocating for the UN General Assembly and UNSC to act on the International Court of Justice (ICJ) request to address Israel's illegal presence in Palestine.
The ICJ recently ruled that Israeli settlement activities violate international law and ordered Israel to cease its occupation and dismantle illegal settlements while compensating for damages caused.
