Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Kemenko Marves) dismissed claims that Indonesia has adopted the wrong strategy for electric vehicle (EV) battery investments.

Deputy for Investment and Mining Coordination Septian Hario Seto emphasized on Wednesday (9/10/2024) that both nickel and lithium-based EV batteries have strong potential.

“We’re not limited to a dichotomy of nickel or lithium batteries; we have the resources to develop both,” he said, as reported by antaranews.com..

Septian highlighted that Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) batteries are favored in Europe and the US, while Lithium Ferro Phosphate (LFP) batteries are popular in Asia.

Indonesia has nearly completed its EV battery ecosystem, with a lithium refinery being built in Morowali, a copper foil factory in Gresik, and an anode material plant recently inaugurated in Kendal.

Seto added that Indonesia’s anode production capacity could reach 160,000 tons per year by early 2025, making it the largest ecosystem outside China.

“So, if people think we’ve followed the wrong trend, that’s not true,” Seto said.
