Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Ministry of Communication and Informatics has started blocking three free Virtual Private Network (VPN) services to reduce access to online gambling sites.
Minister Budi Arie Setiadi said on Thursday (1/98/2024) that these VPNs were frequently used by online gamblers to bypass restrictions.
He said that the closure is part of a broader strategy to tackle digital content issues, particularly in online gambling, according to antaranews.com.
Currently, there are 20-30 VPN providers in Indonesia, with only three free VPN services targeted for closure. Paid VPN services remain unaffected due to their different market segment.
If the measure proves insufficient, the government may extend the ban to additional free VPNs.
Minister Budi Arie emphasized that combating online gambling is crucial for maintaining productive digital spaces in Indonesia.
