Inp.polri.go.id - Lumajang. Mount Semeru, located on the border of Lumajang and Malang in East Java, erupted Tuesday night (26/11/2024), spewing ash 600 meters above its summit.
“The eruption occurred at 8.35 pm, with the ash column reaching 600 meters above the summit, or 4,276 meters above sea level,” said Sigit Rian Alfian, an officer at the Mount Semeru Observation Post, as quoted by antaranews.com.
The volcanic plume appeared grayish-white and drifted toward the north and northeast. Seismic recordings measured a maximum amplitude of 22 mm with a duration of 133 seconds.
Over the course of Tuesday, 16 eruptions were recorded, though most were obscured by clouds. The largest eruption, visible at 8.35 pm, was accompanied by ash expulsion.
Mount Semeru remains on alert status, prompting the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) to issue safety recommendations.
Residents are prohibited from conducting activities within 8 kilometers of the Besuk Kobokan drainage to the southeast and must stay 500 meters away from its riverbanks to avoid potential pyroclastic flows and lahars.
Authorities also warned of possible lava flows and rain-triggered lahars in nearby river basins.
