Head of Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Muhammad Cholil Nafis emphasized the importance of tolerance between religious communities during Nyepi Day and the first day of Ramadan. “We have to be compassionate in the community. Seek what makes us united, do not seek something that would only separate us,” said Cholil on Monday (3/11/2024). “Maybe we are different in religion, but in the context of nationalism, we celebrate our biggest and most important day together,” adds Cholil. Cholil continues there is no need to belittle others and invites people to respect one another. “In truth, we already have this tolerance aspect from long ago. I have seen no hatred present between people, although different in religions,” Cholil continued. He hopes that the tolerance between religious communities would be nurtured and preserved by all. He also said that people should pay no mind to other religious rituals, and should prioritize living together peacefully as Indonesians. (ad/ndt/pr/nm)
