Inp.polri.go.id - Jayapura. Head of Papua Regional Police Public Relations Division, Senior Superintendent Igantius Benny Ady Prabowo issued a warning to the people regarding the extreme weather that may hit Papua.
Referring to the official statement of Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), there will be downpour, storm, and strong winds in several regions.
Senior Superintendent Ignatius Benny Ady Prabowo says the extreme weather will occur in the confluence area which includes the Indian Ocean, North West Aceh, West Bengkulu, South China Sea, Natuna Sea and North Pacific Ocean, Papua.
"This warning was issued as an anticipatory step to reduce the impact of the disaster," says Benny on Monday (9/16/2024).
The extreme weather was triggered by the interaction of several global and regional weather factors. One of the main factors is the ongoing activity of Kelvin Waves and Equatorial Rossby.
"Warm sea surface temperatures in several Indonesian waters also contribute to an increase in the supply of water vapor, which has the potential to increase the chances of rain clouds forming, especially in coastal areas," he continued.
BMKG also noted that the potential for heavy rain is influenced by the emergence of Tropical Cyclone Bebinca which is predicted to still be active in the Pacific Ocean Northeast of the Philippines.
"This condition raises the potential for rain cloud growth around the cyclone and along the convergence or confluence," said Benny.
He also implores public to remain careful and prepare themselves for any impact from the extreme weather.
Papua Regional Police also ready to provide aid and support for the disaster handling and mitigation if needed. With this information, it is hoped that the public can be more prepared and alert to potential dangers that may arise due to extreme weather in the next few days.
