Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has raised serious concerns about the strong suspicion of involvement by human trafficking networks in the Rohingya refugee crisis within the country. Speaking during a press conference in Jakarta on Friday (8/12/23), he said, "I have received reports regarding the growing number of Rohingya refugees entering Indonesian territory, especially in Aceh Province." President Jokowi has issued directives for the competent authorities to take strict actions against perpetrators of human trafficking. Additionally, he emphasized the necessity of providing temporary humanitarian aid to refugees while prioritizing the interests of the local community. The government has scheduled discussions on potential solutions with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), which holds responsibility for refugee-related issues. "The Indonesian government will continue to coordinate with international organizations to address this issue," President Jokowi said. In related developments, President Jokowi has assigned Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Mahfud MD to oversee the Rohingya refugee situation. Minister Mahfud, speaking on Thursday, emphasized the ongoing efforts to find resolutions, underscoring the necessity to effectively address both domestic and humanitarian needs. (ar/inp/pr/nm)
