President Jokowi and President Xi Jinping Reach 8 Cooperation Agreements

President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo and President of China Xi Jinping have concluded their meeting in Chengdu, China, on Thursday (27/7/23), with the signing of eight cooperation agreements across various sectors. "The trip of President Jokowi to China was upon the invitation of President Xi Jinping, coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the comprehensive strategic partnership between Indonesia and China," stated Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi as quoted from the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube channel on Friday (28/7/23). Minister Retno revealed that President Jokowi and Xi Jinping focused on strengthening mutually beneficial economic cooperation, emphasizing the consideration of local labor and environmental friendliness. "In the area of trade, efforts to bolster Indonesia's exports to China are continuously being intensified. In 2022, the Indonesia-China trade reached over US$133 billion, resulting in a surplus position," she said. During the event, President Jokowi requested President Xi Jinping to open access for Indonesian products in China. In response, the Chinese President welcomed the signing of cooperation protocols for imports. "Regarding this matter, China will import flour from Indonesia for porang and tabasheer powder. We are actively encouraging the renewal of protocols and an increase in import quotas for swiftlet nests, along with resolving import protocols for Indonesian marine products," she said. In the health sector, Indonesia and China have signed a plan of action for implementing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This resulted in nine MoUs in the private sector related to technology transfer for vaccine production, halal vaccines, and diagnostic tools. "During the meeting, they also encouraged cooperation in genomic vaccine development and biotechnology to address potential new pandemics. This includes the construction of the National Genebank in China and a biotechnology center in Indonesia," she added. Regarding investments, China's interest in investing in Indonesia remains substantial and President Jokowi plans to hold a meeting with Chinese investors. "Various potential investment sectors include green energy, fiberglass, healthcare, and petrochemicals. The President also invited Chinese investments in the development of the Indonesian Capital City (IKN)," she said. Eight Cooperation Agreements Resulting from President Jokowi's Meeting with President Xi Jinping are as follows: 1. Protocol on Phytosanitary Requirements for Tabasheer Exports from Indonesia to China 2. Action Plan for Health Cooperation 3. Memorandum of Understanding on Joint Research and Development Centers 4. Memorandum of Understanding on Sharing Knowledge and Experience Related to the Relocation of Indonesia's New Capital City 5. Memorandum of Understanding on Enhancing Indonesia-China "Two Countries, Twin Parks" Cooperation 6. Memorandum of Understanding on Chinese Language Education 7. Memorandum of Understanding on Economic and Technical Cooperation 8. Memorandum of Understanding in Nine Private Sector Fields (ndt/hn/um)
