Inp.polri.go.id - Semarang. The Acting Governor of Central Java, Nana Sudjana, has revealed that at least 11,400 people have been displaced as a result of floods in the Demak and Kudus regencies.
"Currently, there are over 11,400 residents that we have evacuated, both in Demak and Kudus," heĀ  said on Saturday (10/2/2024). Acting Governor Nana explained that the floods in Demak were caused by the collapse of the Wulan River embankment at the border of Demak and Kudus, impacting approximately 71,000 residents whose homes were submerged. Thirty-five villages across seven sub-districts were affected by the floods, with Karanganyar sub-district in Demak being the hardest hit, where floodwaters nearly reached the rooftops of houses, antaranews.com reported. The Wulan River is fed by large rivers such as the Lusi and Serang rivers. High rainfall intensity has caused the water level in the Wulan River to rise significantly. Two embankments along the Wulan River, measuring 33 meters and 20 meters respectively, collapsed, resulting in floods inundating residential areas and agricultural land. In terms of response measures, Acting Governor Nana ensured coordination with the Ministry of Public Works and HousingĀ  to immediately repair the damaged embankments. "Aid such as staple food supplies, daily necessities, blankets, mats, bathing facilities, and medical equipment have been distributed. Health posts are also set up at each evacuation center," he added. (mg/inp/pr/nm)
