inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Head of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Dwikorita Karnawati conducted a check on a number of weather monitoring devices belonging to her institution. The devices include the Automatic Weather Observing System (AWOS), Low Level Windshear Alert System (LLWAS), and Marine Automatic Weather Station (MAWS). All of this was checked to ensure the readiness of the devices in detecting potential extreme weather in the Surabaya area, East Java.

AWOS is the main tool in monitoring weather conditions for flight safety, especially when aircraft take off and land. This information is crucial for flight traffic controllers in determining the feasibility of weather conditions to ensure flight safety at Juanda Airport, Surabaya.

LLWAS functions to monitor wind direction and speed to identify potential dangerous turbulence, such as opposing winds that can cause aircraft to skid or lose control. If this potential is detected, a warning will be immediately sent to Air Traffic Control (ATC) and conveyed to the pilot so that they can take mitigation steps, such as delaying landing, go-around, or diverting flights to other airports.

Meanwhile, MAWS functions to monitor maritime weather around Tanjung Perak Port. MAWS is equipped with temperature sensors, water level, humidity, wind direction and speed, rainfall, and sea surface temperature, and is able to transmit data per minute. The data obtained is very important for the safety of shipping, such as information on extreme weather, high waves, and tides that affect port operations.

"This is BMKG's effort to keep the public safe as they travel via airport or port, especially from the threat of extreme weather. We asked for your full support in carrying out our duties carefully, quickly, precisely, and accurately," explained Dwikorita Karnawati.
