Inp.polri.go.id - Batam. The Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) has suspended the distribution of latiao, a popular Chinese snack made from wheat flour and chili oil, following multiple food poisoning cases across several regions.
BPOM Chief Taruna Ikrar announced the suspension Friday (1/11/2024), saying laboratory tests revealed Bacillus cereus bacteria contamination in some latiao products.
“Based on lab results, we identified Bacillus cereus, a bacteria that causes symptoms such as stomach pain, dizziness, and vomiting. This action prioritizes public health," he said, as quoted by antaranews.com.
The agency began its investigation after receiving reports of food poisoning linked to latiao in Lampung, Sukabumi, Wonosobo, South Tangerang, West Bandung, and Pamekasan. BPOM’s inspection of import and distribution facilities found four out of 73 latiao products on the market contaminated. The distribution practices were considered to violate health standards.
In response, BPOM has ordered importers to recall and destroy contaminated batches.
“We are working with the Ministry of Communication to suspend online sales of latiao to safeguard consumers,” Taruna added.
BPOM has also suspended all latiao imports and registrations pending further review.
