The Jakarta Regional Agency for Disaster Management (BPBD) reported that heavy rains and the overflowing Ciliwung River resulted in flooding in nine neighborhoods in East Jakarta on Thursday (30/11/2023), including the residential areas in Jatinegara, East Jakarta. Sanusi, a local neighborhood head in the affected areas said, "Water began to inundate residential areas on Thursday morning at approximately 5 am, with water levels ranging from 30 centimeters to 1.25 meters." Attributing the flooding to heavy rains in  nearby Bogor and Depok on 19 November 2023, Sanusi reported around 100 affected houses, with no residents evacuated. Due to its proximity to the Ciliwung River, his neighborhood faces regular flooding during river surges despite government efforts to engineer the Ciliwung River. "The government's Ciliwung River canal program has shown no effectiveness in reducing flooding in this area," Sanusi said. (ar/inp/pr/nm)
