Former Vice President Hamzah Haz Passes Away

Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Hamzah Haz, the 9th Vice President of Indonesia, passed away on Wednesday morning (24/7/2024) at 9.30 am at Tegalan Clinic, Jakarta.

His body was laid to rest at his family cemetery in Jogjogan Village, Puncak, Bogor regency, West Java following the state funeral ceremony led by Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, Hadi Tjahjanto.

Hamzah was Vice President of President Megawati Soekarnoputri from 2001 to 2004 and was Chairman of the United Development Party (PPP) from 1998 to 2007. 

Born on 15 February 1940, in Ketapang, West Kalimantan, he started his career as a teacher in 1960 before becoming a journalist. He led the daily newspaper Berita Pawau and held several government positions, including Minister of Investment under President BJ Habibie and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives. He also served as Coordinating Minister for People’s Welfare under President Abdurrahman Wahid.

He was survived by his 12 children.
