Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Indonesia has called on the international community, particularly the signatories to the 1951 Refugee Convention, to take greater responsibility in resolving the Rohingya refugee crisis. Speaking at a press conference in Jakarta on Tuesday (12/12/2023), Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lalu Muhammad Iqbal announced that Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi would make the case at the Global Refugee Forum in Geneva, Switzerland, from 13 to 15 December 2023. Highlighting the slow progress in addressing the Rohingya issue, particularly in terms of resettlement, Iqbal stressed the need for all UN member states, especially those that are party to the Refugee Convention, to address the Rohingya crisis, antaranews.com reported. According to the UN refugee agency (UNHCR), the influx of Rohingya refugees into Indonesian territory continues to rise, with more than 1,200 arriving since November 2023, including 300 in Aceh last week. Iqbal attributed the increase in Rohingya refugees to the unresolved conflict in Myanmar. He asserted Indonesia's commitment to help resolve the conflict in Myanmar. Although Indonesia is not a party to the UN Refugee Convention, it is providing temporary assistance and shelter to Rohingya refugees on humanitarian grounds. President Joko Widodo has expressed suspicion that a human trafficking network is involved in the arrival of the refugees.. "Indonesia continues to cooperate with international organisations, especially UNHCR and IOM (International Organisation for Migration), to address this issue. We continue to coordinate both at the UN level and on the ground," Iqbal reiterated. (mg/inp/pr/nm)
