inp.polri.go.id – The Chief of Traffic Corps (Kakorlantas) of the National Police (Polri), Inspector General Firman Shantyabudi explained about the ban of flip-flops for motorcycle drivers in order to minimize the fatality of road accidents. Instead of wearing flip-flops, he advised the people to wear shoes to avoid accidents. According to Kakorlantas, accidents often occur when they are having short distance travel. "Because there are people who say something like, 'Sir, it’s close, why do we have to wear shoes just to buy tempeh at the market'. However, accidents often happen when we traveling shortly, just like when we go to the market to buy tempeh. Moreoever those kind activity are routinely does every day. I tell you, there are no such thing as intenional accidents," he explained, Wednesday (15/6/22). Therefore, every motorcyclist should to prepare as well as possible before leaving the house when using a motorcycle, both short and long distances, by wearing shoes, helmets, and jackets as an effort to avoid accidents. "We try to keep optimize the plan. Whil the God already has a plan, we will continue to try our best in reducing accident fatalities by providing adequate protection,” explained Kakorlantas. Inspector General Firman Shantyabudi remarks his statement that the use of flip-flops has no protection if the driver’s feet is in direct contact with the road, while the use of shoes could minimalized the fatality rate of the vehicle. "I am not focusing on the use of flip-flops, but the fact there's almost no protection when wearing the flip-flops is concerning. Because the people who often drives a motorbike (with flip-flops), their skin could have a direct contact with the asphalt," explained Kakorlantas. Kakorlantas also confirmed that there were no fines for them who wear the flip-flops. However, officers will advice and educate them instead. This changes will be difficult to implement, however Kakorlantas believes that in the future people will start to be aware of protecting themselves with complete equipment when riding motorbikes. "I convey to members that if they meet drivers who are still wearing them (flip-flops), they should suggest them to wear a better protection. There will be no fine when wearing flip-flops,” he said. “This may not be easy to get through, just like when we forced the people to wear a helmet, but when theyrealized how important it is, they naturally comply with the rules, “explained Kakorlantas.
