Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno has called upon law enforcement agencies to conduct thorough investigate into the fire incident at Way Kambas National Park (TNWK) in Lampung. "First and foremost, it must be investigated whether the incident was deliberate or not. In the event of intent, it should be subjected to the applicable criminal law," said the Minister during "The Weekly Brief With Sandi Uno", which was broadcast online from the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy office in Jakarta on Monday (9/10/23). Minister Sandiaga said that his office will coordinate with inter-ministerial agencies to advocate for legal clarity on the incident. According to reports, the fire on Wednesday (4/10/23) engulfed 200 hectares of land and threatened the sustainability of the ecosystem within the National Park area. "To prevent the recurrence of such an event, this aspects warrants thoughtful consideration. While we are working hard to advance eco-friendly tourism, incidents of this nature pose considerable challenges," he emphasized. The minister said that his office has been currently coordinating with the National Park management to bolster educational efforts targeting the public with regard to activities to abstain from within the national park area. Specifically, he added, the prohibition of open fires, given their propensity to rapidly escalate due to prolonged drought conditions exacerbated by El Niño. (ar/inp/pr/nm)
