Inp.polri.go.id - Jayapura. The Chief of Papua Regional Police Inspector General Mathius D. Fakhiri acknowledged the difficulty in reaching the challenging location of Susi Air pilot, Philip Mark Merthens, who remains in the custody of the Armed Criminal Group (KKB). "The leader, Egianus Kogoya, frequently shifts the location of the hostage-taking between Nduga and Lanny Jaya regions, making it challenging for our personnel to approach the area, especially since the KKB always keeps the hostage under close watch," he stated on Monday (8/7/23). He mentioned that efforts for the release continue to prioritize negotiation, involving community and religious leaders as well as the pilot's family, to approach Egianus and persuade him to release the hostage safely. Based on received information, it was revealed that the Nduga Regent had already met with Egianus. However, the outcome of their discussion has not been disclosed yet. "We are still waiting for further information regarding the conversation that took place with the Egianus group," he said. He expressed hope that Egianus will soon release the hostage in good health and condition. Furthermore, he stresses that the release should not be linked to demands for independence. "Negotiations can be conducted, but it is essential not to demand independence or weapons and ammunition," he concluded. (ay/hn/nm)
