Inp.polri.go.id - Jayapura. The drought and famine in Central Papua have had a severe impact on the lives of 7.500 people across three districts in Puncak Regency. Six people, including toddlers, have tragically lost their lives due to food shortages. The police have reported that a cross-sectoral coordination effort will implement three emergency response measures. Police Senior Superintendent Ignatius Benny Ady Prabowo, the Head of Public Relations of Papua Regional Police, stated that the cross-sectoral team will conduct investigations into the deaths of these six individuals on Monday (8/7/23). He added, "The emergency response includes epidemiological investigations into the deceased victims. The drought disaster is currently affecting 7.500 people." The Indonesian National Police (INP) and the Indonesian Military will be responsible for ensuring the distribution of logistical aid, including nutritious food and medicines, while cross-sectoral cooperation will conduct regular health education sessions, he explained. He further revealed that their current priority is to ensure the distribution of logistical and food assistance to the districts providing refuge for the affected residents. The communities in the three districts of Agandugume, Lambewi, and Oneri are grappling with severe drought and famine. The main focus of aid is presently on the Sinak District as the primary evacuation location and central distribution center for humanitarian assistance. "The INP and Indonesian Military will oversee the distribution of the aid, taking into account the difficult terrain accessible only by two-wheeled vehicles and helicopters. Our utmost commitment is to ensure that the government's aid reaches and is received by the affected communities," he concluded. (my/hn/nm)
