Inp.polri.go.id - Meulaboh. Nine convicts of online gambling were publicly caned at the Meulaboh Penitentiary in West Aceh on Thursday (5/9/2024).

They were found guilty of gambling with stakes up to two grams of pure gold, as per local regulations, according to antaranews.com.

Each of them received a sentence of ten lashes, reduced by two due to their 39-day prison term, resulting in eight lashes each. The adjustment follows Article 18 of Aceh Regulation (Qanun) No. 6/2014, which allows for such reductions.

Mawardi, the West Barat Prosecutor's Office Chief of Evidence, said the caning aims to deter future violations of Islamic law. 

The West Aceh Barat administration expected the caning will prevent further violations of Islamic teachings.
