Inp.polri.go.id – West Papua. During Colonial Period, West Papua, previously called West Irian or Irian Jaya, was under the dictatorship of Dutch colony. Then, in 1945 after Indonesia declare its Independence, the dutches still tries to save their last bits of colonial control in West Papua. The border conflicts of West Papua between Indonesia and the Dutch have been going on since the independence of Indonesia. Moreover, through New York Agreement in 1962, the Dutch agrees to hand over the administration of West Papua to the United Nations, which then eventually be given to Indonesia. Then, in 1969, a Plebiscite of People's Opinion Determination in West Papua was held to determine the regional politic status. The results, named "Pepera", shows the majority people of Papua supports the region to be included into Indonesia and from then on, West Papua has officially become part of Indonesia. Being part of Indoensia, the region was obviously given special autonomy status. Since integrated to Indonesia, Papua and West Papua provinces have seen significant development in economy, social and politic. The government also continuously give their best in defending and prospering Papua as many parties are determined to take it away. (ad/ri/pr/nm)
