Police to Shutdown 191.995 Illegal IMEI Phones

The Cyber Crime Division of the Indonesian National Police (INP) is actively engage in collaboration effort with various relevant parties to address a potential "shutdown" or deactivation of 191.995 mobile phones related to illegal or non-compliant IMEI registration. "Regarding the shutdown of those devices, coordination and communication are still ongoing with various parties," said the Head of the Cyber Crime Division Brigadier General Adi Vivid Agustiadi Bachtiar on Tuesday (1/8/23). Amidst concerns arising from this initiative, the Cyber Crime Division seeks to assuage public apprehension. They emphasize that every measure is being taken to approach the situation with a balance between security considerations and minimizing public panic or inconvenience. "We are working to identify an optimal strategy that will not incite panic and safeguard the interests of the public as consumers," he further explained. He added that among 191.995 mobile phones with illegal IMEI numbers that will be blocked or deactivated, 176.874 are iPhones. (my/hn/nm)
