President Joko Widodo has ordered Coordinating Minister of Politics, Law, and Security (Menkopolhukam) Mahfud MD to handle the Rohingya immigrant issue in Aceh that has increasingly grows by the number. “I did order (Menkopolhukam) to handle the case together with regional government and UNHCR,” says President Jokowi on Monday (12/4/2023). The spoke person of Indonesian UNHCR Mitra Salima states that the immigrants came to Indonesia as they were desperate with the killings, abduction, and dangerous situation at their home state. According to Mitra, Rohingyans in Indonesia have constantly reminded that they are only a guest and has to follow the applicable law and norms in Indonesia. UNHCR data shows that more than 70 percent of Rohingya immigrants are women and children. (ad/ndt/pr/nm)
