Inp.polri.go.id - Central Lombok. A local resident was found dead in a burnt hillside area in Nandus Hamlet, Mertak Village, Central Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara.

The incident occurred when the victim,  identified as Minakum (66),  was burning land to prepare for planting corn ahead of the rainy season, according to Central Lombok Sub-regional Police spokesperson First Inspector Lalu Brata on Saturday (26/10/2024).

The fire spread quickly due to high temperatures and strong winds, engulfing the area.

Minakum reportedly panicked and moved further up Nandus Hill but did not return home that evening, prompting his wife to seek help from local residents.

On Friday morning, he was found deceased with severe burns on Nandus Hill. Police investigated the scene, though the family declined an autopsy.

The police urged the community to avoid using fire for land clearing, especially during the dry season, as it can lead to devastating consequences for both individuals and the environment.
