Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi has been appointed as the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' Special Envoy for Water Issues to advance the global water agenda, particularly following the 2023 UN Water Conference.

"The Special Envoy will support efforts to secure the future of water by fostering stronger political, economic, and socio-cultural cooperation at all levels," according to the UN statement released on Friday (13/9/2024).

She will begin her new role on 1 November  2024, after completing her duties as Indonesia's foreign minister in President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo's cabinet.

In her capacity as Special Envoy, Minister Retno will focus on promoting synergy among stakeholders on water issues, supporting the achievement of global water targets, such as SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) by 2030, and preparing for the 2026 UN Water Conference.

She will also serve as a high-level advocate for water and sanitation issues, integrating them into political agendas both within and beyond the UN.
