The Head of Indonesia's National Narcotics Board (BNN) Commissioner General Petrus Reinhard Golose has brought to light an alarming rapid proliferation of thousands of new drug variants circulating across the globe. "There are at least 1.212 new types of drugs that have been circulating. Among them, 92 types have been detected in Indonesia," he said as quoted from the pmjnews website on Thursday (8/3/23). He underscored the intricacies of this emerging issue, highlighting that these substances are composed of novel chemical compounds yet to be identified, and currently remain unregulated by existing laws, one of which is called psychoactive substances (NPS). "A new type labeled as new psychoactive substances (NPS) is infiltrating Indonesia. What is particularly disconcerting is that the substances are consumed not only by the youth but also individuals across a wide spectrum of age groups," he said. (bg/pr/nm)
