Police General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, the Chief of the Indonesian National Police (INP), has outlined the objectives of the 17th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime (AMMTC), aiming to foster cross-border collaboration among ASEAN nations in the prevention and combat of transnational crimes. In a statement received in Labuan Bajo, West Manggarai, on Thursday (17/8/23), he emphasized, "The 17th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime (AMMTC) is tasked with facilitating and promoting cooperation and coordination among ASEAN member states to address transnational crimes." Hosted by the INP in Labuan Bajo, West Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, the event is scheduled to take place from August 20 to 23, 2023. The meeting's agenda covers pressing transnational crime issues including terrorism, human trafficking, cybercrime, arms smuggling, illegal wildlife trade, illicit logging, drug trafficking, money laundering, international economic crimes, maritime piracy, and human smuggling. This 17th edition of AMMTC will convene ministers from 10 ASEAN member states along with their respective delegations. Delegates from three dialogue partner countries, including China, Japan, and South Korea, will participate. Timor Leste will participate as an observer, and the Chairman of Directors-General of Immigration Departments and Heads of Consular Affairs Divisions of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs (DGICM), alongside the ASEAN Secretary-General, will be in attendance. The total participant count is projected to reach 275 individuals. The Chief of INP said that the meeting aims to strengthen and enhance cross-sectoral coordination, including the exchange of information on transnational crime issues with relevant ASEAN sectoral bodies. It also seeks to increase cooperation with ASEAN dialogue partners and related stakeholders. Upon the conclusion of the plenary session, a Memorandum of Understanding is set to be signed with six ASEAN nations, amplifying bilateral police cooperation against transnational crimes. The countries involved include Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. A pivotal moment during the 17th AMMTC will be the issuance of a Joint Statement encapsulating the outcomes of diverse sessions. Additionally, a Declaration outlining the agreed-upon course of action following the meeting will be released. He concluded by affirming, "The formulation of this declaration is initiated by the host country and will be deliberated and sanctioned at the ministerial-level meeting. The declaration's development initiates from technical-level sessions and culminates with adoption during the AMMTC event." (ndt/pr/nm)
