Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta.  The government is set to unveil a regulation governing the deployment of artificial intelligence (AI),  Minister of Communication and Informatics Budi Arie Setiadi said on Wednesday (13/12/2023). Currently in the formulation stage, the regulation could take the form of a ministerial decree or a circular letter with the aim of issuance at the earliest opportunity, antaranews.com reported. Minister Budi Arie highlighted that the regulation would draw inspiration from a recent instrument introduced by the European Union. The focus will be on regulating the application of AI, taking into account associated risks with AI-powered products and services, rather than merely addressing the technology itself. The goal of the regulation is to safeguard democracy, uphold the rule of law, and protect fundamental rights, including freedom of speech. Simultaneously, it aims to attract investment and foster innovation, he said. The minister explained that the regulation does not signify a rejection of AI's technological advancement. Instead, it seeks to mitigate potential negative consequences associated with AI use. "In principle, we are not rejecting technological development. What we are trying to do is regulate the technology so we can suppress its likely negative impacts," Minister Budi Arie explained. In November, Deputy Minister of Communication and Informatics, Nezar Patria, revealed the ministry's intention to launch an AI regulation in December. (mg/inp/pr/nm)
