Inp.polri.go.id -  Doha. After making history by reaching the Round of 16, the Indonesian National Team's journey in the 2023 Asian Cup came to an end with a 0-4 defeat against Australia in the knockout stage at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium, Doha, on Sunday (28/1/2024). Australia secured a two-goal lead through Elkan Baggott (own goal), Martin Boyle, Craig Goodwin, and Harry Soutttar, antaranews.com reported. In the upcoming quarterfinal, Australia will face the winner of the match between Saudi Arabia and South Korea at Al Janoub Stadium, Al-Wakrah, on 2 February 2024. During the first half, Australia took the initiative to attack, but Indonesia had an early opportunity through Rafael Struick's shot, narrowly missing over Matt Ryan's crossbar. Australia eventually managed to score first in the 12th minute through Jackson Irvine's shot, resulting in an own goal by Elkan Baggott, making the score 1-0. Indonesia relieved the pressure and had a chance with Justin Hubner's shot, but it went straight into Matt Ryan's arms. The Garuda squad continued to seek an equalizing goal through efforts from Yakob Sayuri and Marselino Ferdinand, but both chances failed to materialize. Towards the end of the first half, Australia added a second goal through Martin Boyle's header in the 45th minute, extending the lead to 2-0, which remained unchanged until halftime. In the second half, the game had a moderate pace, but Australia dominated, while Indonesia struggled to break free from the pressure. The Socceroos nearly increased their lead through Mitchell Duke after capitalizing on Elkan Baggott's mistake, but his shot missed the target. Australia had another opportunity with Nathaniel Atkinson's long-range shot, but it failed to find the mark. Under Graham Arnold's guidance, the team successfully extended the lead to 3-0 with Craig Goodwin's goal, capitalizing on the rebound from Jackson Irvine's header in the 89th minute. Just two minutes later, Australia further extended the lead to 4-0 after a free-kick delivery was met with a header by Harry Soutttar, breaking through Ernando Ari's goal. In the remaining time of the match, Australia continued to dominate, and when the final whistle blew, the score remained 4-0. (mg/inp/pr/nm)
