Mount Ibu Eruption Sparks Volcanic Lightning Storm

Inp.polri.go.id - Lumajang. An eruption at Mount Ibu in North Maluku early on Saturday morning (11/5/2024) created a stunning display of a volcanic lightning storm along with fiery lava and ash expulsion. 

Hendra Gunawan, the Head of the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), said that the eruption generated an ash column reaching four kilometers in height.

The eruption, occurring propelled ejected lava approximately 800 meters above the peak. 

No casualties were reported, according to antaranews.com. 

Mount Ibu, at alert level III since 8 May 2024, experienced increased volcanic activity and seismicity.

From 16 April to 8 May 2024, seismic activity included 130 eruption earthquakes, 8 avalanche earthquakes, and various others. Residents within a three-kilometer radius are advised to steer clear, with a five-kilometer sectoral expansion toward the northern crater opening.
