National Police Chief Orders Regional Police to Take Strict Action on Illegal Loans

National Police Chief General of Police Listyo Sigit Prabowo, gave instructions to all levels of the Regional Police to take firm action against the organizers of financial technology peer to peer lending (fintech P2P lending) or illegal online loans. This action has been considered to have harmed many people. This is also a direct instruction from President Joko Widodo gave special attention to the crime of borrowing. "The crime of illegal borrowing is very detrimental to the community. So that special handling steps are needed," explained the National Police Chief in his directive to the Regional Police online from the National Police Headquarters, Jakarta, Tuesday (10/12/21). As for the perpetrators of the crime of borrowing, they often provide promotions or offers that can make people tempted to use these services. Amid the Covid-19 pandemic situation, the loan organizers also took advantage of the people whose economy was affected. According to the national police chief, illegal lending is very detrimental to the community because criminals will use the victim's data if they are late in paying or unable to pay off their loans. The thing that makes the issue of illegal loans even sadder, the National Police Chief said, there were several cases of suicide because they couldn't afford the significant interest from the illegal loans. "Many also found billing accompanied by threats. In some cases, victims have even committed suicide due to the accumulating interest and non-payment," he explained. Furthermore, the National Police Chief said that until October 2021, the National Police had received as many as 370 police reports related to the crime of illegal borrowing. Of these, 91 have been completed, 278 are in the investigation process and three stages of the investigation. Therefore, in terms of Pre-Emtif, the National Police Chief emphasized to all his staff to be active in conducting education and informing and digital literacy to the public about the dangers of using illegal loan services. Furthermore, it encourages Ministries/Agencies to renew loan regulations. Next, Sigit asked his staff to carry out cyber patrols on social media from the preventive side. In this regard, the National Police has collaborated on eradicating illegal loans with Financial Authority (OJK), Bank Indonesia, the Ministry of Communication and Information, and the Ministry of Cooperatives and MSMEs.
