The Regional Government of Nabire, in collaboration with the Indonesian Military (TNI) and Indonesian National Police (INP), convened a meeting at the Uwapa District Office with the aim of finding solutions and addressing grievances arising from a conflict between two community groups, which claimed the lives of two individuals.

Nabire Regent Mesak Magai, accompanied by the Police Superintendent I Ketut Suarnaya, Chief of Nabire Sub-Regional Police, and the Commander of 1705 Nabire Military District, highlighted the objectives of the regional government. Their primary focus is to ensure the security of Nabire and actively facilitate the mediation process in order to resolve the issues at hand.

"The leadership of the Nabire Regional Government would like to express our condolences for the loss of two victims from the Mee community, and the purpose of this meeting is to resolve the issues that have occurred in Nabire," he stated in a written statement on Thursday (8/6/23).

During the meeting, their paramount goal was to find a comprehensive solution that would effectively prevent any further casualties or undesirable incidents, including the burning of houses and other acts of violence. Swift resolution of the ongoing conflict is essential to restore a sense of safety and enable residents to resume their daily activities without enduring prolonged fear.

The Chief of Nabire Sub-Regional Police provided additional details during the meeting. He reported that on Wednesday (6/7/23) at approximately 22:45 WIT (Western Indonesian Time), a distressing incident of houses being set on fire occurred. Preliminary data obtained from field personnel indicated that six houses at KM 80 and one house at KM 64 fell victim to the wrath of the enraged crowd.

He mentioned that the TNI-INP forces are currently conducting investigations regarding the injured victims, as no one has been taken to the nearest health center or hospital thus far. He assured that the resolution of the conflict would be pursued diligently, prioritizing the prevention of further casualties and material losses.

Appealing to the entire community, he emphasized the importance of resolving the issues peacefully and safely, and stressed the collective responsibility of everyone to uphold a secure and conducive environment in Nabire Regency.

"We also urge community leaders and those entrusted with responsibilities within each group to assist us in maintaining control over their members. Together, we can achieve the peace we all aspire for in Nabire Regency, allowing normal activities to resume, including shopping centers, offices, and schools," he stated.

After hearing the statements of the Regent and the Chief of Nabire Sub-Regional Police, a donation of Rp20,000,000 from the Nabire Regent and Rp100,000,000 from the Paniai Regent was presented to the families of the victims as a gesture of support and solidarity.
