Inp.polri.go.id - Ternate. Mount Ibu in West Halmahera, North Maluku, erupted at around 7.33 pm local time on Sunday evening (17/11/2024), releasing a striking 100-meter-high flare from its peak and a towering 800-meter column of ash.

“The lava flare was observed reaching 100 meters after the volcano emitted an ash column 800 meters high,” said Axl Roeroe, a monitoring officer at the Ibu Volcano Observation Post in West Halmahera, in a statement..

He noted that the ash plume drifted southwest and was recorded on seismographs with a maximum amplitude of 28 mm, lasting approximately 52 seconds.

Mount Ibu, standing 1,325 meters above sea level, remains on Level III (Alert) status. Authorities have urged residents and tourists to avoid activities within a 4-km radius, with a 5-km extension toward the active crater’s northern opening.

“If an ashfall occurs, people should wear masks and goggles to avoid exposure,” Axl, stressing the importance of maintaining public calm, avoiding misinformation, and adhering to local government directives.

The recent activity underscores ongoing volcanic risks in the region, requiring vigilance and preparedness from local communities.
