Inp.polri.go.id - Lumajang. Mount Semeru, Java's tallest volcano at 3,676 meters, erupted on Sunday afternoon (10/11/2024), releasing a pyroclastic flow accompanied by flood tremors.
The eruption, recorded at 2.40 pm local time, had a tremor amplitude of 22 mm lasting 478 seconds, according to Lumajang's Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) head, Yudi Cahyono.
Fog limited visibility, so the full reach of the pyroclastic flow was unclear, though nearby areas remain unaffected, according to antaranews.com.
Monitoring data from the Mount Semeru Observation Post noted ten eruptions between midnight and 6:00 PM, with ash plumes reaching up to 700 meters. The alert status for Mount Semeru remains on "caution."
The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Agency (PVMBG) has issued advisories, restricting activity within eight kilometers of the southeastern slope and establishing a 500-meter buffer zone along the Besuk Kobokan River to mitigate risks from pyroclastic flows and volcanic mudflow floods extending up to 13 kilometers.
PVMBG has also warned against activities within a three-kilometer radius of the crater due to rockfall hazards, urging caution for possible pyroclastic flows, lava avalanches, and lahar floods along rivers originating from the summit, including Besuk Kobokan, Besuk Bang, Besuk Kembar, and Besuk Sat.
